Rainforest Beef

I recently finished the book "Altruistic Armadillos, Zenlike Zebras" by Jeffrey Mason. Great book and I stubbled upon this little bit of information, "it takes 16 pounds of soy and grain not to mention 400 gallons of water to raise one pound of beef and 55 square feet of rainforest are destroyed for that same pound of meat." It brought me back to why I originally became a vegetarian. I did a report on the rainforest in 5th grade and when I heard about "rainforest beef" and the deforestation to produce said beef I said no more. I had never liked meat and I can remember many painful meals that included the line "you are going to sit here until you eat 1 piece of that meat." Shudder. (no offense mom and dad, I see where you were coming from now.)
If you want to find out more about deforestation and the impact of the meat industry on third world countries there is a movie called "Hamburger: Jungleburger," I think. It is a very in depth look at the meat industry in Costa Rica. Check it out.

Here is a picture of the rainforest in French Guiana, just so we all remember what is at stake.

Love,
Miss Bee
